APK: The Dutch Periodic Inspection and Your Modifications

The APK (Algemene Periodieke Keuring) is the mandatory inspection carried out by garages recognised by the RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority. It applies the EU periodic test and is the standard a modified car has to clear.
Tint and lights are strict
The Netherlands effectively bans tint on the windscreen and front side windows, which must stay clear enough to meet the light-transmission rule; rear windows are unrestricted. Lights must be the correct colour, type and aim, so aftermarket or tinted units are a common failure point.
Exhaust, emissions and noise
The catalytic converter and emissions equipment must be intact, so a decat fails. Exhaust noise is limited, and a system clearly louder than standard can fail. A cat-back that keeps the cat and a sensible noise level is the safe route.
Suspension, wheels and approval
Lowered suspension and non-standard wheels are checked for fit and clearance. Larger changes to the car can require RDW approval and an update to the registration to be legal, so confirm before fitting anything structural or performance-related.
