What Is A Cat-Back Exhaust?

A cat-back exhaust replaces everything from the catalytic converter back: the mid-pipe, silencers and tips. Because it leaves the cat in place, it's mostly about sound, weight and looks rather than big power.

How it works

Wider, smoother piping downstream of the cat reduces backpressure a little and lets the engine clear its exhaust gas more freely. On a naturally aspirated car the gains are modest because the cat and manifold are the real restrictions; on a turbo car the turbo has already done most of the pressure-dropping. What you mainly buy is a deeper note, less weight, and a valved system that can be quiet when you want it.

What to actually expect

Treat peak-power claims with suspicion: a cat-back on its own is typically worth low single-digit horsepower. The honest reasons to fit one are sound, a few kilos saved, and the look of proper tips. If you want power from the exhaust side, the downpipe (not the cat-back) is where it lives.

Does it fit your car?

Cat-back systems are model-specific and often generation-specific. Confirm the exact car and, on valved systems, that the wiring matches yours.

Is it legal?

Road-legality depends on the country and, sometimes, the exact car.
