What Are Wheel Spacers?

Wheel spacers sit between the hub and the wheel to push it outward, widening track and filling the arches. Done right they sharpen the stance and can help handling; done wrong they're a safety risk.

How it works

Pushing the wheels outward widens the track, which can add stability and lets a narrower wheel sit flush with the arch. Hub-centric spacers locate on the hub bore so the wheel stays perfectly centred, and thicker spacers need longer or extended studs/bolts to keep safe thread engagement. Slip-on spacers that rely only on the bolts, or that leave too little thread, are the ones that cause problems.

What to actually expect

A modest, hub-centric spacer with correct fasteners is a cheap way to improve fitment and looks, and can subtly aid grip. The risks come from cheap non-hub-centric parts, insufficient thread engagement, and added strain on wheel bearings with very wide spacing. Fitment and legality both depend on doing it properly.

Does it fit your car?

Spacer thickness, bore and bolt pattern are car-specific. Check hub bore and stud length for your car before buying.

Is it legal?

Road-legality depends on the country and, sometimes, the exact car.
