Is a Decat Legal in the UK?

A full decat is not road-legal in the UK. Taking the catalytic converter out (or gutting it) removes the emissions equipment the car was type-approved with, which is an offence and an MOT failure.

Why?

The catalytic converter is part of the emissions system your car was certified with when it was built. UK law makes it an offence to use a vehicle on the road with that equipment removed or made less effective, so a decat pipe that deletes the cat entirely is not road-legal, however well it is made.

It also fails the MOT twice over: the tester checks tailpipe emissions against the standard for the car's age, and a car with no working cat will not meet them, and there is a visual check that the emissions equipment fitted at manufacture is still present.

The legal alternative is a "sports cat" - a higher-flow unit that still contains a working, type-approved catalyst. That keeps the emissions control in place while freeing up a little flow, which is the difference between a legal upgrade and an illegal delete.

What decides if it's legal

  • Removing or gutting the catalytic converter is not road-legal.
  • A missing or hollowed cat fails the MOT emissions and visual checks.
  • A "sports cat" is legal only if it keeps a working, type-approved catalytic converter.

Does it depend on your car?

The rule is the same for every petrol car with a catalytic converter. What changes is where the cat lives - some cars have it in the downpipe, others in a separate section - but removing it is an offence on all of them.

Will a decat fail an MOT?

Yes. A car with the catalytic converter removed fails the MOT on two counts: the tailpipe emissions test against its age-based limit, and a visual check that the emissions equipment fitted at manufacture is still present. There is no version of a full decat that passes an MOT on a car that came with a cat.

Is a sports cat legal instead?

Yes, if it keeps a working, type-approved catalyst. A high-flow "sports cat" still cleans the exhaust, so it stays within the emissions rules while freeing a little flow. That is the line: a genuine sports cat is a legal upgrade, a hollow or gutted cat is an illegal delete.

Can I run a decat just for track days?

On a dedicated track car that never uses the road, yes, since the emissions rules apply to road use. But the moment the car is driven or parked on a public road it is an offence and, at an MOT, an automatic failure, so a decat is not a part-time road-legal option.
