Is Window Tint Legal in the US?
Window tint is legal in the US, but how dark you can go depends entirely on your state. Each state sets its own minimum light transmission (VLT) for the front side windows and windshield, and the limits vary widely.
Why?
There is no single national tint rule. Federal safety standards cover the glass itself, but the darkness you are allowed to run is a matter of state vehicle codes, and they differ a lot. Front-side-window limits range from as strict as 70% VLT in California to 20% or 25% in some states, with plenty at 35% in between.
The windshield is the most consistent part: nearly every state bans tint on the main windshield beyond a strip along the top (often down to the "AS-1" line or the top few inches). Rear side windows and the rear windshield are usually treated more loosely, and many states allow darker film there, especially with rear-view mirrors fitted.
Because the number that matters is your own state's VLT limit, the same film can be legal in one state and a ticket in the next. Many states also offer medical exemptions for darker tint. Check your state's specific VLT figures before you commit to a shade.
What decides if it's legal
- Window tint limits are set by each state, not by federal law.
- Front-side-window VLT minimums commonly range from about 20% to 70%.
- Most states allow only a tint strip at the top of the windshield.
- Rear glass rules are usually looser, and medical exemptions exist in many states.
Does it depend on your state?
Yes, more than almost any other mod. The legal darkness is set by state law, so the same tint can pass in one state and fail in another. The windshield-strip rule is broadly similar everywhere; the front-side-window VLT limit is what changes.
