Is a Turbo or Supercharger Upgrade Legal in the UK?

Adding or upgrading a turbo or supercharger is legal in the UK as long as the car still meets its emissions and noise standards. The power is fine; defeating the emissions equipment to get it is not.

Why?

Forced induction is not banned. A bigger turbo, a supercharger conversion or a hybrid turbo is a legal upgrade provided the car still passes the exhaust-emissions standard for its age and keeps the emissions equipment it was type-approved with - the catalytic converter, and the DPF on a diesel. The moment a build deletes those to make power, it becomes an offence.

Noise is the other limit: the exhaust must still keep its silencer and not be louder than the type-approved level. And because a forced-induction upgrade is a big change, if the engine itself is substantially modified or swapped you should notify DVLA, and you must declare the work to your insurer.

The rest is engineering rather than law: brakes, cooling and tyres need to match the new power for the car to stay roadworthy, which the MOT and a dangerous-condition standard both expect.

What decides if it's legal

The car must still meet its exhaust-emissions standard and keep the cat/DPF.
Noise must stay within limits (C&U reg. 54).
Notify DVLA if the engine is substantially changed; declare the mod to your insurer.
Braking, cooling and tyres must suit the extra power.

Does it depend on your car?

What is bolt-on versus a full build varies enormously by platform. The legal rule is constant: keep it emissions-legal, keep it quiet enough, keep it roadworthy, and declare it.
