Supercharger or Turbo: Which Adds Power Better?

Both force more air into the engine for more power. The difference is how they are driven, how the power arrives, and what each one asks of the rest of the car.

A supercharger and a turbo both add power by forcing more air in, but they get their drive differently. A supercharger is driven by the engine through a belt, so boost comes in instantly and predictably. A turbo is driven by exhaust gas, so it is more efficient and makes bigger peak numbers, at the cost of some lag.

Forced induction is how you make real power from a given engine, and the two ways to do it feel quite different from the driver's seat. Which suits you depends on how you want the power delivered and how far you plan to take it.

How each one is driven

A supercharger is bolted to the engine and spun by a belt off the crankshaft, so it is always working in proportion to engine speed. A turbocharger is spun by a turbine sitting in the exhaust stream, using energy that would otherwise leave as heat. That single difference, belt-driven versus exhaust-driven, is where almost every other trait comes from.

How the power feels

Because a supercharger is tied directly to engine speed, boost builds the instant you open the throttle, giving a linear, immediate shove that is easy to read. A turbo has to spool up on exhaust flow first, so there is a moment of lag low down, then a stronger surge as it comes on boost. Modern twin-scroll and smaller turbos have shrunk that lag a lot, but the character difference is still there.

Efficiency and peak power

The turbo's advantage is that it recycles waste exhaust energy rather than stealing power from the crank to drive itself, which makes it more efficient and gives it more headroom for big peak figures. A supercharger costs some of the power it makes to spin, but it delivers what it makes cleanly and reliably. For outright numbers a turbo usually wins; for instant, no-drama response a supercharger is hard to beat.

What it means for your build

Both are major changes that add heat and cylinder pressure, so both want supporting work: fuelling, cooling and often stronger internals as boost climbs. Adding either to a car that was not born with it is a big step, not a bolt-on afternoon. Both are also modifications to declare to your insurer, and both raise emissions questions that decide road-legality where you drive.
