Is a Rear Wing or Spoiler Legal in the US?
A rear wing or spoiler is legal in the US. No state regulates aero by size or style; the requirements are that it is solidly mounted, has no dangerous edges, and does not hide the plate, lights or your view rearward.
Why?
From subtle lip spoilers to full chassis-mount wings, rear aero is legal in all 50 states, and there is no dimensional limit to stay under. The applicable law is the general equipment code: the wing must be fixed securely enough not to detach at highway speed, and its endplates and edges must not be positioned or shaped so they could injure someone leaning over or walking past the car.
Placement is what needs a moment of thought. The wing and its mounts must not obscure the license plate, the tail lights or the high-mounted center brake light; a big wing mounted low across the trunk line is the layout most likely to shadow the plate or brake light, and that is a straightforward equipment violation. Mounted high on stands, wings clear all three easily.
Rear vision is handled by mirror law: with two compliant side mirrors, a wing bisecting the rear window is legal in every state, the same as a panel van with no rear glass at all. Bolt it through properly, keep everything visible, and the wing itself is a clean legal yes.
What decides if it's legal
- Wings and spoilers are legal in every state.
- The wing must be securely mounted with no sharp or dangerous edges.
- It must not block the license plate, tail lights or the center brake light.
- Rearward vision must stay adequate given the required mirrors.
Does it depend on your state?
Not meaningfully. The secure-mounting, visibility and lighting rules read the same everywhere; only inspection strictness varies. The car matters more than the state: where the plate and center brake light sit decides how easy a big wing is to package legally.
