Is Private Plate Spacing Legal in the UK?

A private (personalised) number plate is legal to run in the UK, but only if it keeps the correct character spacing and size. Moving the letters, or using bolts and screws to make the plate read as a name, is misrepresentation and an offence.

Why?

Buying and displaying a personalised registration is completely legal. What is not legal is altering how it is laid out. The characters must use the mandatory spacing, size and font, so the plate stays a standard, machine-readable registration.

The common trap is "styling" a plate to spell a word: nudging the gap between characters, or adding black bolts and screws so a letter looks like a different one, to make the registration read as a name. That is misrepresenting the registration mark, and it carries a fine, the plate can be withdrawn, and it fails the MOT.

So the plate itself is fine; it is the spacing and any fixings that decide legality. Keep the standard layout and a private plate is road-legal; re-space or disguise it and it is not.

  • You must not shift spacing or use fixings to make the plate read as a word or name.
  • Misrepresenting the registration is an offence and an MOT failure.
