Is Number Plate Blocker Spray Legal in the UK?

Number plate "blocker" or "photo blocker" sprays are not road-legal in the UK. The plate must be clearly readable, including by cameras, so anything designed to stop a camera reading it is an offence.

Why?

A number plate exists to identify the car, and the law requires it to be legible. Sprays and films that claim to reflect a camera flash or scramble an ANPR or speed-camera read work by deliberately stopping the plate being read, which is the exact opposite of what is required.

Using one is treated as obscuring or misrepresenting the plate. That carries a fine, the plate can be seized, and it is an automatic MOT failure because the tester must be able to read the plate. The fact the spray is invisible to the eye does not help, since the offence is about the camera being defeated.

There is no legal version of a product whose purpose is to hide your plate from enforcement. A plain, clean, correctly made plate is the only road-legal answer.

What decides if it's legal

  • The number plate must be clearly legible at all times.
  • Anything that hinders a camera reading the plate is an offence.
  • Products sold to defeat ANPR or speed cameras are not road-legal to use.
  • A hidden or obscured plate fails the MOT and draws a fine.

Does it depend on your car?

Plate legibility is required on every vehicle. A blocker spray is not legal on any of them, because the offence is about defeating the camera, not the car.
