Is Number Plate Blocker Spray Legal in the US?
Photo-blocker plate spray is not legal in the US. Every state requires the license plate to be plainly legible, many states specifically outlaw products intended to defeat plate cameras, and using one to dodge tolls invites separate evasion charges.
Why?
The pitch is a clear spray that reflects camera flash so red-light, speed and toll cameras cannot read the plate. That purpose is exactly what plate-display law prohibits: state codes require plates to be clearly visible and legible, and a growing list of states ban covers, coatings and sprays designed to obstruct or interfere with plate reading, by eye or by camera, in so many words.
Using one adds a second layer of trouble. Toll systems photograph every passage, and a plate treated to defeat them turns an unpaid toll into deliberate evasion, which carries steeper fines and, pursued far enough, criminal exposure in some states. Officers who spot a treated or abnormally reflective plate at a stop have an easy citation on top of whatever prompted the stop.
Independent testing has also repeatedly found the sprays simply do not beat modern infrared plate cameras. It is a product that costs money, does not work, and is illegal to the extent it does anything at all. Keep the plate clean and unobstructed; there is no legal version of this mod.
What decides if it's legal
- Every state requires the license plate to be plainly visible and legible.
- Products designed to defeat plate cameras are explicitly banned in many states.
- Obscuring a plate to evade tolls or enforcement carries its own penalties.
- The sprays largely do not work as advertised anyway.
Does it depend on your state?
No. Plate legibility is required in every state; states differ only in whether they name camera-defeating products explicitly and in how hard toll evasion is punished.
