Is a Laser Jammer Legal in the US?
Laser jammers are legal in some US states and banned in others. Unlike a passive radar detector, a jammer actively transmits to defeat a police laser, and a number of states, including California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas and Virginia, prohibit them.
Why?
A laser jammer sends out a signal to stop a police LIDAR gun getting a speed reading. Because it actively interferes with the enforcement instrument, it is treated more harshly than a radar detector, and its legality is decided state by state.
Several states ban the sale or use of laser jammers outright, among them California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington, D.C. In those places, running one to defeat police laser is an offense in itself.
In states without a specific ban, jammers occupy a grayer area. Because the list of prohibiting states is long and changes, and because active interference invites tougher treatment than passive detection, check your state's law carefully before using one.
