Is an EV Conversion Legal in the UK?
Converting a petrol or diesel car to electric is legal in the UK, but you must tell DVLA to change the recorded fuel type, may need an IVA inspection for a major rebuild, and need specialist insurance and a safe high-voltage install.
Why?
Swapping the engine for an electric motor and batteries is allowed, and it removes the tailpipe-emissions question entirely. The key duty is registration: DVLA must be told so the fuel type on the V5C becomes electric, and a car that has been substantially rebuilt can fall under the rebuilt/radically-altered vehicle rules.
Because a conversion changes weight distribution, braking demand and structure, a big enough job can require an Individual Vehicle Approval test to confirm it is roadworthy. The high-voltage battery and wiring must also be installed to a safe standard - this is not a mod to bodge.
Insurance is the other hurdle: mainstream policies rarely understand a home or specialist EV conversion, so you will usually need a specialist modified-vehicle insurer. Handled properly, an EV swap is legal and increasingly common; the effort is in approval, safety and cover.
