Are Exhaust Tips Legal in the UK?

Cosmetic exhaust tips are legal in the UK. They slip or bolt onto the end of the existing tailpipe and change only the appearance, so they do not touch the silencer, the catalytic converter or the car's noise level.

Why?

A tip is the visible chrome or black end of the pipe. Aftermarket versions that clamp or weld over the standard outlet are purely decorative: the exhaust behind them, including the silencer and the emissions equipment, is unchanged, and the noise the car makes stays the same.

Because nothing about the silencing or emissions is affected, there is no legality issue in fitting them. The only practical points are that they should be securely fixed, have no sharp edges sticking out, and not be so oversized or badly fitted that they foul the bodywork or the exhaust flow.

Note the difference from a full exhaust system: a "tip" is just the end trim. If a part changes the silencer, the pipework or the cat, it is that part's rules that apply, not this.

What decides if it's legal

Slip-on or bolt-on tips that only change the look are fine.
They must be securely fixed with no sharp protruding edges.
They must not change the silencing or make the car louder.
They must not deform to restrict the exhaust or touch the bodywork.

Does it depend on your car?

Fitment and clearance vary by car, but a genuine cosmetic tip is legal on any of them because it changes nothing the law measures.
