Wheel Fitment Explained: Offset, PCD and Spacers
A wheel that fits is about more than diameter. Offset, bolt pattern and bore decide whether it bolts on, clears the brakes and sits right in the arch.
Fitment is the set of numbers that let a wheel bolt on and sit correctly: PCD (bolt pattern), centre bore, and offset (ET). Get these wrong and the wheel will not fit, will foul, or will load the bearings incorrectly. Spacers change offset but must be used with care.
Two wheels of the same diameter can fit completely differently. These are the measurements that actually decide it, and why spacers change the picture.
PCD and centre bore: will it bolt on
PCD (pitch circle diameter, or bolt pattern) describes the number of bolts and the circle they sit on, such as 5x112. It must match the hub exactly. The centre bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel; it should sit on the hub for support, so a wheel with a larger bore needs a hub-centric ring to centre it properly and avoid vibration.
Offset (ET): where the wheel sits
Offset, marked ET in millimetres, is the distance from the wheel mounting face to its centreline. A higher ET tucks the wheel inward; a lower ET pushes it outward toward the arch. Offset and width together decide whether the wheel clears the brakes and suspension on the inside and sits flush without fouling the arch on the outside. It is the number people get wrong most often.
What spacers really do
A spacer moves the wheel outward, which effectively reduces the offset. This can push a wheel to sit flush or clear a big brake caliper. Used well, spacers are a valid tuning tool. The trade is that they change scrub geometry and place more load on the wheel bearings and studs, so they need the correct thickness, longer bolts or studs with full thread engagement, and hub-centric fitment.
