Oil Catch Cans: What They Do and Whether You Need One
An oil catch can traps oil vapour from the crankcase breather before it can coat the intake tract.
A catch can sits in the crankcase ventilation line and collects oil mist that would otherwise reach the intake. It helps most on direct-injection and hard-driven engines, and it is about cleanliness, not power.
Every engine produces blow-by, a mix of gases and oil vapour that slips past the piston rings into the crankcase. The PCV system routes that back into the intake to be burned. A catch can intercepts the oil in that flow.
What blow-by does
Crankcase ventilation feeds blow-by gases back into the intake so they are burned rather than vented. Those gases carry a fine oil mist. Over time that oil coats the intake tract and, on some engines, bakes onto components. A catch can is a small reservoir plumbed into the ventilation line that lets the vapour condense and collects the oil, so less of it reaches the intake.
When it earns its place
Direct-injection engines are the clearest case. They spray fuel straight into the cylinder, so the fuel never washes over the intake valves, and oil mist can build carbon deposits on those valves. A catch can reduces the oil reaching them. Boosted engines and cars driven hard produce more blow-by, so they benefit too. On a port-injected engine driven gently, the gain is smaller.
What to keep in mind
A catch can does not add power; it protects cleanliness over the long term. It needs emptying periodically, since a full can stops working. A poor installation that leaves the crankcase unable to breathe properly, or that vents to atmosphere, can cause problems and may not be legal for road use in some regions. A well-plumbed can that keeps the factory ventilation intact is the safe approach.
