Is a Rear Wing or Spoiler Legal in the UK?

A rear wing or spoiler is legal in the UK as long as it is safely mounted and does not block your lights, number plate or rear view. Big GT wings are legal; badly-fitted or sight-blocking ones are not.

Why?

As with any external addition, the Construction and Use rules require no sharp edges or dangerous projections, and that the part is fixed on securely. A large wing puts real load on its mounts, so it needs to bolt to the structure properly, not just screw into the thin boot skin where it could tear away.

The sightline rules are what catch spoilers specifically. A wing must not obscure the high-level (third) brake light or the main rear lamps, and it must not hide the number plate, which has to stay fully visible and lit. A tall wing that sits across the rear screen can also reduce the driver's view, which is a separate problem.

Get those right and even an aggressive wing is road-legal. It is the ones that block a light or a plate, or are held on with double-sided tape, that fall foul.

What decides if it's legal

No sharp edges or dangerous projections (pedestrian safety).
Must not obscure the high-level or rear brake lights.
Must not hide the number plate or block the view through the rear window.
Mounted securely to the structure, not just the boot skin.
