Are Studded Tyres Legal in the UK?

Winter tyres are freely legal in the UK, and studded tyres are allowed too, but only in wintry conditions. Run studs on clear, dry roads and you risk both damaging the surface (which you can be liable for) and using an unsuitable tyre.

Why?

Ordinary winter and all-season (M+S) tyres carry no restriction - you can fit and use them at any time of year, and many people leave them on through spring. They improve grip in the cold and are entirely road-legal.

Studded tyres are the special case. They are permitted for use when there is snow or ice, where the metal studs bite into a frozen surface. The condition attached is that you must not damage the road, and if studs chew up a clear tarmac road you can be held responsible for that damage. So they are a genuine cold-weather tool, not something to run all year.

For safe handling it is also best to fit matching tyres across all four wheels rather than mixing types. In short: winter tyres any time, studded tyres for the snow and ice they are made for.
