Are Mud Flaps Legal in the UK?
Mud flaps are legal in the UK, and on some vehicles or wide-wheel setups a form of spray suppression is actually required. The only conditions are that they are securely fitted, do not drag, and do not cover any lights or the plate.
Why?
Mud flaps catch the spray and debris thrown up by the tyres, and fitting them is allowed. On top of that, the rules on wings and spray suppression mean certain vehicles, and setups where wider wheels throw the spray wider, need adequate cover, so flaps can be part of staying legal rather than just a style choice.
The practical conditions are simple: they must be mounted securely so they cannot flap loose or fall off, they must not hang so low that they drag on the road, and they must not obscure any lights or the number plate.
Within that, mud flaps are road-legal and often useful. A loose, dragging or light-blocking install is the only way they become a problem.
What decides if it's legal
- Mud flaps are legal and can help contain spray from the tyres.
- Some vehicles and wide-wheel setups are required to have spray suppression.
- They must be securely fitted and not drag on the road.
- They must not obscure lights or the number plate.
Does it depend on your car?
Whether spray suppression is required depends on the vehicle type and how far the wheels throw spray. The rules on secure fitting and not obscuring lights apply to every car.
