Interior and ambient lighting: UK vs US vs Germany
Interior lighting is largely unregulated until it becomes visible from outside the car or starts to resemble a signal lamp.
All three markets reach the same verdict, conditional. What differs is the rule each one uses to get there, which is the third column.

The most permissive row here. All three allow it, and all three draw the line at the same two places: visible from outside, or looks like a signal.
Why the answers differ
Is aftermarket interior lighting legal?
Ambient interior lighting is the most permissive row in this dataset, and all three markets draw the same two lines. The first is visibility from outside: interior light must not read as exterior light, which in practice means nothing red showing forward and nothing white showing rearward through the glass. The second is signal confusion, so flashing, pulsing, rotating or running-light effects are out because they resemble indicators, brake lights or emergency lighting. Germany states explicitly that interior lighting needs no entry in the vehicle papers, which is a rare thing to find in the German column. The one thing worth noting is that underbody lighting stays prohibited there regardless, so a kit sold as interior and underbody is only half usable.
