When to Replace Brake Pads and Discs

Pads wear down and discs wear thin, but both give clear warnings first. Here is how to read the signs, what the wear limits mean, and why pads and discs are often changed together.

Replace pads when the friction material is low or the wear indicator makes itself heard, and replace discs when they reach the manufacturer's minimum thickness, carry a heavy lip or judder. On the UK MOT, a pad worn below 1.5mm is a dangerous defect, and the car must still achieve 50% service brake efficiency on the rollers.

Brakes are consumables by design: pads give up friction material every stop, and discs slowly lose thickness. Neither fails without warning, so the job is noticing the signals and acting before the limits arrive.

The warnings pads give

Most pads carry a wear indicator: a small metal tab that touches the disc and squeals when the material is nearly used up, or on many modern cars a sensor that lights a dashboard warning. You can also eyeball pad thickness through the wheel spokes on many cars. A constant squeal is the prompt to act; a grinding noise means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is eating the disc, which turns a cheap job into an expensive one. Longer stopping distances and a low brake fluid level are quieter versions of the same message, since the fluid level drops as pads wear.

Discs have a minimum too

Every disc has a manufacturer minimum thickness, usually stamped on the disc itself and listed in service data, because a disc that is too thin cannot absorb heat safely. Discs also develop a wear lip at the outer edge and can crack or score with age and heat. A steering-wheel or pedal judder under braking usually points at the disc surface. Any pad change is the natural moment to measure the discs against their minimum.

What the MOT requires

The tester inspects condition and then measures performance on a roller brake tester. A pad worn down to its wear indicator is a major defect, and one below 1.5mm of friction material is dangerous. On the rollers, the service brake must reach at least 50% efficiency and the parking brake 16%, and a significant side-to-side imbalance across an axle is also a failure. Worn friction parts are exactly what drags those numbers down.

Why pads and discs go together

New pads bed into the surface of the disc they run on. Fit fresh pads against a worn, lipped or scored disc and they seat badly, bed slowly and never use their full face, so braking suffers and the new pads wear oddly. A common pattern is that a set of discs lasts about two sets of pads, though it varies with driving. Two rules always hold: measure the discs whenever the pads come off, and replace pads and discs in axle pairs so the car brakes evenly.

The conditions that matter

  • A squealing wear indicator, a pad warning lamp or visibly thin pads mean it is time.
