Camber, Toe and Caster: What Alignment Settings Actually Do
Alignment sets the angles your tyres meet the road at, and those angles decide grip, steering feel and how fast your tyres wear.
Camber, toe and caster are the three main alignment angles. Camber tilts the tyre, toe points it in or out, and caster affects steering feel and straight-line stability. Small changes have a large effect on grip and tyre life.
Alignment is not one setting but several angles working together. Get them right and the car steers cleanly and wears its tyres evenly; get them wrong and you lose grip, feel, or a set of tyres.
Camber: the tyre tilt
Camber is how far the top of the wheel leans in (negative) or out (positive) when viewed from the front. A little negative camber keeps the outside tyre flatter on the road when the car leans in a corner, which improves cornering grip. Too much negative camber wears the inside edge of the tyre and can reduce straight-line braking grip, so road cars use modest amounts.
Toe: pointing the wheels
Toe is whether the wheels point slightly together (toe-in) or apart (toe-out) seen from above. Toe-in adds straight-line stability and calmer steering. Toe-out sharpens turn-in response. It is the setting tyre wear is most sensitive to: even a small error drags the tyres and scrubs tread away quickly, so toe is worth checking regularly.
Caster: feel and self-centring
Caster is the forward or backward tilt of the steering axis, best seen from the side. More positive caster gives stronger self-centring, better high-speed stability and more weight to the steering, at the cost of heavier low-speed effort. It also adds camber as you turn, which helps cornering grip. Caster is usually set by design and adjusted less often than camber and toe.
