What a Wastegate Does: Internal vs External
A wastegate is the valve that stops a turbo from making too much boost. It bleeds exhaust around the turbine, and whether it lives inside the turbo or beside it shapes how a build behaves.
A wastegate caps boost by letting some exhaust bypass the turbine so it stops accelerating. Internal wastegates are built into the turbo and suit most road cars; external wastegates mount separately, flow more and hold high boost more precisely.
Boost keeps climbing as long as the turbine keeps speeding up. Left unchecked it would rise until something failed, so every turbo setup needs a way to cap it. That is the wastegate’s whole job.
Why a turbo needs one
A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas, and the more it spins the more boost it makes. Without a limit, boost would keep rising past what the engine and turbo can safely take. A wastegate solves this by opening a passage that routes some exhaust around the turbine wheel. With less gas driving it, the turbine stops accelerating and boost settles at the target. The gate is held shut by a spring and pushed open by pressure acting on a diaphragm or piston.
Internal wastegates
An internal wastegate is a flap built into the turbine housing, opened by a small actuator bolted to the turbo. It is compact, cheap and fitted to the vast majority of factory turbo cars. For stock and mild builds it is more than enough. Its limit shows at higher power: the bypass passage is small, so at big boost it can struggle to release enough exhaust, which lets boost creep up beyond target near the top of the rev range.
External wastegates
An external wastegate is a separate valve plumbed into the exhaust manifold ahead of the turbo, often venting into its own pipe. Because it can be much larger, it releases far more exhaust and controls boost more precisely at high power, which is why serious builds use them. The trade-offs are packaging and plumbing: they need room and a proper manifold, and a screamer pipe that vents to atmosphere is loud and, on a road car, usually not permitted.
What controls when it opens
The gate opens when pressure overcomes its spring. Change the spring and you change the baseline boost. A boost controller, manual or electronic, sits between the pressure source and the actuator to delay the gate opening, letting boost build higher and more sharply before it bleeds off. This is how the same hardware can run different boost levels. Whatever the method, the aim is steady, repeatable boost rather than the highest number, since overshoot is what breaks engines.
