Two Piece vs One Piece Brake Discs
A two piece disc separates the friction ring from the mounting hat, which saves weight and lets the hot part expand without dragging the rest with it.
Two piece discs cut unsprung and rotating weight and handle repeated heat cycles better, mainly because the iron ring can grow without being restrained by the hat. On a road car the benefit is real but modest.
A conventional disc is one iron casting doing two jobs: bolting to the hub and providing a friction surface. Splitting those jobs is what a two piece disc does.
What the split changes
In a two piece disc, the friction ring stays cast iron because iron is what pads are designed to work against, while the hat that bolts to the hub becomes aluminium. That alone removes meaningful weight from the rotating assembly. Just as important, the two parts are joined by bobbins or drive pins that allow a small amount of radial movement. A hot iron ring expands, and in a one piece disc the cooler centre resists that expansion, which builds internal stress. Over many heat cycles that stress is what produces coning, where the ring dishes, and eventually cracking.
Floating and semi floating
Fully floating designs let the ring move slightly in both the radial and axial directions and are the most tolerant of heat, which is why they dominate in racing. The side effect is a light rattle when everything is cold, which is normal and disappears with heat and with the brakes applied. Semi floating designs damp that movement, usually with spring elements, giving quieter road manners and slightly less freedom. Neither is inherently the right choice; the question is whether the car spends time hot enough to need the tolerance.
Cost and whether it is worth it
Two piece discs cost several times what an equivalent one piece disc does, and that is the honest obstacle. What you get back is lower rotating mass, better resistance to distortion under repeated heat, and the option to replace only the friction ring when it is worn, which improves the running cost over time on a car that eats discs. For a road car that never sees sustained hard braking, good pads and fresh fluid do more per pound than the disc construction does.
