TPMS and Aftermarket Wheels: What Actually Has to Happen
Fitting a second set of wheels means dealing with tyre pressure monitoring, and what that costs depends entirely on whether your car uses direct or indirect sensing.
An indirect system needs no hardware, just a reset. A direct system needs a sensor in every wheel, programmed to your car, and a warning light left on can fail a roadworthiness test.
Pressure monitoring has been standard equipment on new cars for years, in the US since the late 2000s and across Europe since 2014. Two very different technologies sit behind the same dashboard symbol.
Indirect: no sensors at all
An indirect system infers pressure from the anti lock braking wheel speed sensors. A tyre losing pressure has a slightly smaller rolling radius, so it turns marginally faster than the others, and the software watches for that. There is no hardware inside the wheel, which makes a second set of wheels easy and cheap. After fitting, or after any pressure adjustment, you run the reset procedure in the menu so the system relearns what correct looks like. The weakness is that it detects a difference between wheels, so four tyres losing pressure evenly is the case it handles worst.
Direct: a sensor in every wheel
A direct system has a battery powered sensor strapped to or built into each valve, transmitting an actual pressure reading and its own identity code to the car. New wheels therefore need sensors, and those sensors need the right identity codes stored in the car. There are three routes: move the original sensors into the new wheels at fitting time, buy a second set and have the car relearn them each swap, or use programmable universal sensors that a tool can clone to the original identities so the car cannot tell the difference. Sensor batteries are sealed and last several years, after which the sensor is replaced.
Do not just ignore the light
A permanently lit pressure monitoring warning is more than an annoyance. In the UK, the MOT inspection manual treats a TPMS fault as a major defect on cars first used from 1 January 2012, which is a failure. In the US the system is required equipment under FMVSS 138. Beyond any test, a lit warning hides the real thing it is there to tell you, which is a slow puncture. If you run winter wheels, sort the sensors properly once rather than living with the light for half the year.
The conditions that matter
