Spring Rates Explained

Spring rate is how stiff a spring is, and it shapes everything from ride comfort to how a car takes a corner. Here is what the numbers mean and why stiffer is not automatically better.

Spring rate is the force needed to compress a spring a set distance, quoted in kg/mm or lb/in. Higher rates resist body roll and dive but transmit more of the road; the right rate depends on the car's weight, its use, and the damper it is paired with.

Every coil spring has a rate: how much force it takes to compress it by one unit of distance. That one number decides how the car rides, how much it rolls in corners, and how much grip the tyre keeps on a bumpy road.

What the numbers mean

A spring rated at 8 kg/mm compresses one millimetre for every 8 kilograms of force. The same idea in imperial units is pounds per inch. Some springs are linear, with one rate through their whole travel, while progressive springs start soft and stiffen as they compress, which is why many lowering springs feel close to stock around town but firmer when pushed.

Why rate must match weight

The spring supports the corner of the car above it, so the right rate scales with weight and its distribution. A rate that suits a light roadster would barely move under a heavy saloon, and the same rate on the lighter rear axle of a front-engined car would make the back end skip. This is why coilover kits are developed per model, and why copying a rate from a different car rarely works.

Stiffer is a trade, not an upgrade

Higher rates reduce body roll, brake dive and squat, which sharpens response and keeps the geometry nearer its ideal in corners. The cost is compliance: a tyre needs to stay pressed against the surface to grip, and on a bumpy road an overly stiff spring lets it skip instead. That is why cars set up for rough roads often run softer springs than track cars, and still corner faster there.

The damper has to keep up

A spring stores energy; the damper controls how it is released. Fit much stiffer springs on standard dampers and the dampers can no longer control the spring, so the car floats and crashes at the same time and wears the dampers out quickly. Good suspension kits pair rates and damping as a set, which is the main reason a matched coilover kit usually rides better than stiff springs dropped onto stock parts.
