Retrofitting a Reversing Camera or Parking Sensors

Reversing aids retrofit neatly to almost any car. Here are the camera and sensor options, how the picture reaches a screen, what the install involves, and where the UK MOT does and does not care.

Three camera styles cover most cars: a number-plate mount, a boot-handle or factory-style unit, or a universal bracket camera. The picture goes to a mirror monitor or a head unit, sensors need four holes in the bumper, and both aids wire to the reverse light circuit.

Cameras and sensors solve the same problem from different directions: the camera shows you what is behind, the sensors measure how close it is. Kits for both are cheap, and the wiring principle is identical, so many people fit the pair together.

Camera types

The number-plate mount is the universal answer: a frame or small bracket that sits above the plate, using the plate bolts, so nothing is drilled. Its view sits slightly off-centre on some cars but it fits nearly anything. Boot-handle and factory-style cameras replace an existing handle trim or blank for a stock look on supported models, and they usually sit closer to the car's centreline. Universal bracket cameras mount wherever you choose and suit vans, campers and odd bumpers, at the cost of visible hardware.

Getting the picture to a screen

Two display routes dominate. A mirror monitor clips over or replaces the rear-view mirror and shows the feed only when reversing, which suits cars keeping their original stereo. If the car has an aftermarket head unit, most have a camera input and a reverse trigger wire that switches the screen automatically, which is the cleanest result. Wireless transmitter kits avoid running a video cable the length of the car, though a wired feed remains the more dependable picture.

Parking sensor kits

A typical kit is four ultrasonic sensors, a small control box and a beeper or display. The sensors mount through holes drilled in the rear bumper with the hole saw supplied in the kit, sized exactly for the sensors, evenly spaced at a consistent height around knee level. Drilling a bumper sounds drastic but the plastic cuts easily and the sensors sit flush; measure carefully, check what sits behind the bumper skin before drilling, and the result looks factory.

Wiring, and the UK MOT question

Both aids take power from the reverse light circuit, so they wake only when reverse is selected: locate the feed at a rear light cluster with a multimeter and tap it. For UK drivers, retrofitted cameras and sensors are not items the MOT inspection manual tests, so a broken one is not a fail. What the test does check is the driver's view of the road: a monitor mounted where it significantly obstructs the windscreen view can be a defect, so mount screens low or use the mirror or head unit route.

The conditions that matter

  • Power both from the reverse light circuit so they activate only in reverse.
