Suspension bushes are the flexible joints that locate your suspension arms. Rubber is quiet and compliant but deflects under load and wears with age. Polyurethane is stiffer and longer lasting, so geometry stays truer at the cost of extra noise and harshness. Choose by what you want the car to do, not by habit.
Every suspension arm on your car is located by bushes, small flexible joints that decide how precisely each wheel is held. Swapping rubber for polyurethane is one of the cheapest ways to change how a car feels, for better and for worse. Here is what each material does and where an upgrade makes sense.
What suspension bushes actually do
A bush is a flexible joint that locates a suspension arm on the chassis while letting it pivot. Standard bushes are rubber, usually bonded to inner and outer metal sleeves, and they flex rather than rotate on a bearing. That compliance is deliberate. Rubber absorbs vibration and small impacts before they reach the cabin, which is why a stock car feels smooth. The trade-off is that rubber deflects under braking and cornering loads, so the arm moves slightly and the geometry changes mid-corner. Rubber also degrades with age. Cracked or collapsed bushes cause vague steering, shifting alignment and uneven tyre wear.
What polyurethane changes
Polyurethane is a firmer synthetic material that resists deflection and does not perish the way rubber does. With less flex in the joint, the arm stays closer to where the designer intended, so camber and toe hold steadier under load and steering response sharpens. Poly bushes are graded by shore hardness, with softer compounds aimed at road use and firmer grades at track work. The compromises are real. Most poly bushes rotate on the bolt or sleeve rather than flexing, so they need the supplied grease at fitment and can squeak if that is skipped, and they pass more road noise and harshness into the cabin.
How to choose
Fit polyurethane where control matters most. Anti-roll bar bushes and wishbone or control arm bushes carry the biggest loads, so poly there tightens response noticeably for a small comfort penalty. On a comfortable daily with tired suspension, a fresh set of OE rubber bushes is often the right call. It restores factory feel and stays quiet. Mixing is common, poly on the roll bars and key arms, rubber everywhere else. Solid aluminium bushes and rose joints, also called spherical bearings, remove compliance entirely. They are race territory and too harsh for road use. Whatever you fit, get the alignment checked afterwards.
