Intake upgrades are usually the first mod anyone makes, and the choice splits into two philosophies: improve the filter inside the standard system, or replace the system. The right answer depends on what the rest of the car is doing.

The panel filter case

A performance panel filter uses a less restrictive medium in the exact shape of the paper original, so the airbox, cold-air feed and sensors all stay standard. Gains on a stock engine are modest, low single-digit horsepower at best, but it costs little, fits in minutes, is washable rather than disposable, and changes nothing the car was approved with. For a daily driver or a lightly tuned car it is the no-questions choice.

The induction kit case

An open cone filter removes the airbox entirely, and the first thing it changes is sound: the induction roar under throttle is most of what people are buying. Flow-wise a cone can support bigger power on tuned engines where the standard airbox becomes a genuine restriction. The catch is heat: an open filter in a hot engine bay breathes warm air, which costs power, so a serious install needs a cold-air feed or an enclosure, at which point it starts resembling the airbox it replaced.

Sensors, tuning and paperwork

On modern cars the intake shape around the airflow sensor is calibrated; a cone that changes airflow past the sensor can upset fuelling on some engines, which is why induction kits pair best with a matching remap. The honest pairing

Stock or stage 1 daily: panel filter, keep the airbox, spend the difference on tyres. Tuned engine chasing induction noise and top-end flow, with supporting mods and a map: a quality induction kit with proper cold-air routing does what the panel cannot. The mistake is the middle: an open cone on a stock engine buys noise, warm air and sensor grumbles for less gain than the panel.
