Off-Road and Overland Mods: What Is Road-Legal?
Lifts, bars, sliders, tents and towing kit are mostly legal, but each has a specific catch. Here is the road-legal picture for the overland build.
Most overland mods are road-legal in the UK within limits, with two clear exceptions: rigid bull bars that fail pedestrian-safety rules are not, and everything else hinges on being secure, not dangerous, and not obscuring lights or the plate.

The overland build touches a lot of separate rules at once. None of them are mysterious, but each part has its own catch worth knowing before you bolt it on.
Lifts, snorkels and sliders
A suspension lift is legal if the car stays safe: headlight aim reset, geometry sound, nothing fouling, and the change declared. A snorkel is fine as a raised air intake. Bull bars are the exception
Rigid metal bull bars are the one to watch: pedestrian-safety rules mean stiff, non-approved frontal bars are effectively not road-legal on modern vehicles, and only approved energy-absorbing designs are allowed. Detail: Are bull bars legal in the UK?
Roof tents and A-frames
A roof tent is legal within the roof and bar weight ratings, securely mounted, not obscuring lights or the plate, and mindful of the extra height. A-frame towing a car behind a motorhome is legal too, but the towed car needs working rear lights and, over a weight threshold, a working braking system.
The common thread
Almost all of it comes down to the same handful of tests: securely fitted, not a danger to others, lights and plate visible, weights and heights respected, and the changes declared to your insurer. Meet those and the overland build is road-legal; the rigid bull bar is the main thing that simply is not.
The conditions that matter
