A lightweight flywheel reduces the rotating mass at the end of the crank, so the engine gains and drops revs faster. That makes throttle response and rev-matching sharper, but it adds idle vibration, gear rattle and more chance of stalling. It changes feel, not peak power.

What the flywheel does
A flywheel is a heavy disc on the end of the crankshaft. Its mass stores rotational energy, smoothing the pulses from each cylinder firing and giving the engine enough inertia to idle steadily and pull away from rest without stalling. That stored energy is helpful for calm, comfortable driving, but it also resists any change in engine speed, which is where the enthusiast interest begins.
Why lighter feels sharper
Less rotating mass means less inertia to overcome, so the engine revs up faster when you blip the throttle and drops back down faster when you lift. On track and on a spirited road drive that makes the car feel more alert and eager, and it makes heel-and-toe or rev-matched downshifts much easier because the revs rise and fall exactly when you ask. None of this adds peak horsepower, but the car feels quicker to respond.
The trade-offs
The same lost inertia that sharpens response also removes smoothing. Idle can get busier and lumpier, low-speed manoeuvres and hill starts take more clutch care because the engine bogs more easily, and many cars develop a light gearbox rattle at idle as the drivetrain is no longer damped the same way. On a car with a dual-mass flywheel, switching to a lightweight single-mass unit often trades refinement for noise you will hear every day.
Is it worth it
It depends entirely on what you want. For a track or weekend car where response and rev-matching matter more than refinement, a moderately lightened flywheel is a satisfying change. For a daily driver, the extra vibration and stall-prone low-speed behaviour can wear thin fast. A middle path is a modestly lighter flywheel rather than the lightest available, keeping some smoothing while still freeing up the revs.
