What Launch Control Is, and How It Works
Launch control tries to give you the hardest possible start without wasting grip.
Launch control holds the engine at an optimal launch speed and manages power so the driven wheels find grip off the line. It helps consistency, but it also loads the drivetrain hard.
Launch control is a feature built into the engine or transmission control software. Its job is to take the guesswork out of a standing start so more of the engine's power turns into forward motion.
What it does at the line
When engaged, the system holds engine speed at a preset launch point while you keep the throttle down. On release, it manages power delivery, and often traction control, so the wheels grip rather than spin. On a turbo car it can also help build boost before you move, giving a stronger initial hit.
How it manages power
The control unit limits torque using tools such as ignition timing, fuelling and throttle position, then feeds power in as grip allows. Automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes coordinate clutch engagement with this. The aim is to stay near the edge of traction rather than lighting up the tyres or bogging down.
Wear and when to use it
A hard launch puts sudden load through the clutch, gearbox, driveshafts and tyres. Used occasionally it is part of the car's design, but repeated launches accelerate wear on these parts. Grip, temperature and surface all affect the result, so launch control helps most when conditions are good.
