What an Intercooler Does, and When to Upsize
An intercooler cools the compressed air a turbo or supercharger makes before it enters the engine.
An intercooler lowers intake air temperature, which makes the charge denser and more resistant to knock. A bigger unit helps most when the stock one is heat-soaking under sustained load.
Compressing air heats it up. Hot air is less dense and more likely to trigger knock, so forced-induction engines cool the charge before it reaches the cylinders. That is the intercooler's job.
Why cooler air matters
When a turbo or supercharger compresses air, the air temperature rises sharply. Hot air holds fewer oxygen molecules per litre, so the engine makes less power for the same boost. Heat also raises the risk of knock, which forces the ECU to pull timing and cut power to protect the engine. An intercooler sits between the compressor and the intake, shedding that heat so the charge arriving at the cylinders is denser and more stable.
Air-to-air and air-to-water
Most cars use an air-to-air intercooler, a radiator-style core that road air passes through. It is simple and reliable. Air-to-water designs pass the charge through a heat exchanger cooled by a liquid loop, which packages well in tight engine bays and reacts quickly, but adds pumps and plumbing. Both aim for the same result, which is a lower and more consistent intake temperature.
When upsizing helps
A larger intercooler helps most if the stock unit heat-soaks, meaning temperatures climb and stay high during repeated pulls, track sessions, or towing. Signs include power that fades after a lap or a long climb. On a mild tune driven gently, the factory cooler is often enough. Going too large adds volume that the turbo must fill, which can slightly soften throttle response, so match the core to the actual power and use case.
