Pistons take huge pressure and heat on every combustion stroke. How they are made changes how much abuse they can survive, which is why the forged-versus-cast question comes up on tuned engines.

How they are made

Cast pistons are formed by pouring molten metal into a mould. It is a cheap, precise process that suits mass production, and the results are perfectly adequate for standard engines. Forged pistons are pressed from a solid billet under high force, which gives a denser, tougher grain structure.

Where the difference shows

The forging process makes a part that resists cracking and shock better than a cast one. Under high cylinder pressures, detonation or sustained heat, cast pistons are more likely to crack or melt a ring land. Forged pistons tolerate these conditions far better, which is why they are common in high-boost and high-revving builds.

When forged is worth it

For stock or mild tunes, factory cast pistons are usually fine and cheaper to leave alone. Once you push serious boost, big power per litre or hard track use, forged pistons buy a real safety margin. They can run slightly noisier when cold because of looser fitment, which is a normal trade-off.
