E85 resists knock and runs cool, which lets a properly tuned engine make more power, at the cost of range and hardware demands.
Ethanol has a high knock resistance and cools the charge as it evaporates, so a tuned engine can run more timing and boost. But it needs more fuel flow and ethanol-compatible parts, and it reduces range.
E85 is a blend of up to roughly 85 percent ethanol and the rest gasoline. Tuners like it for its knock resistance. It is not a drop-in power gain, though. It only helps if the fuel system and tune are set up for it.
Why ethanol makes power
Ethanol has a high effective octane rating, so it resists knock far better than pump gasoline. That lets a tuner run more ignition timing and, on boosted engines, more boost, both of which make power. Ethanol also has a strong cooling effect as it vaporises in the intake, which lowers charge temperature and further reduces knock. On a forced-induction engine tuned for it, the gains can be significant.
The trade-offs
Ethanol carries less energy per litre than gasoline, so the engine must burn more of it. That means noticeably worse fuel economy and shorter range, and the fuel system must flow more, often needing larger injectors and a higher-capacity pump. Ethanol also attracts moisture and can be harsh on older rubber and fuel lines not rated for it. Cold starts can be harder in low temperatures because ethanol is less volatile.
Blends and availability
E85 pump content varies by season and region, often dropping in ethanol percentage in winter, so a safe tune accounts for that or uses a flex-fuel sensor that reads the actual blend. Availability differs widely by country and even by station. If you cannot get consistent E85, some owners run part-blends to gain a portion of the knock resistance with less range penalty. Any switch needs a matching tune, never just a different pump.
