Do Strut Braces Actually Work?

A strut brace ties the tops of the strut towers together so the body flexes less under cornering load. The effect is real, but how much you notice depends heavily on the car.

A strut brace reduces flex between the strut towers, which keeps suspension geometry more consistent in hard cornering. It is most noticeable on older or open-top shells; on a modern stiff unibody the change is often subtle.

When you corner hard, the suspension pushes up and inward on the strut towers, and the body shell flexes slightly in response. A strut brace is a rigid bar that links the tower tops so they move together instead of apart. It is not an anti-roll bar, which is a separate part that controls body lean.

What a strut brace does

Each strut tower carries the top of a suspension strut, so its position sets part of the wheel's alignment. Under cornering load the towers try to spread apart or shift, and every millimetre of movement changes camber and toe at the loaded wheel. A brace triangulates the towers so the load on one side is shared with the other, cutting that movement. The suspension then works closer to the geometry it was set up with, which drivers usually feel as a slightly crisper, more consistent front end.

When you will actually feel it

The stiffer the shell already is, the less a brace can add. Convertibles and older cars with less inherent body stiffness show the clearest gains, because there is more flex for the bar to resist. Cars on wide sticky tyres and stiff springs also benefit, since higher cornering loads push harder on the towers. On a modern unibody driven normally, the change is often subtle to imperceptible. Back-to-back tests on stiff modern cars frequently struggle to measure a difference at road speeds.

How to think about fitting one

A strut brace is cheap, light and fully reversible, so it is a low-risk experiment. A front upper brace is the common first piece because the front towers see the biggest steering loads. Lower braces and wider chassis bracing exist, but each extra bar adds less than the last, so returns diminish quickly. Be realistic about the outcome. A brace refines steering feel and consistency; it does not add grip, and it will not transform a car that is otherwise stock.
