What parking mode actually does
Parking mode keeps the camera monitoring after you leave. It works a few ways. Motion detection wakes the camera and saves a clip when something moves in front of the lens. Impact or G-sensor detection triggers only when the car is bumped, which uses the least power. Buffered recording holds a few seconds before and after each event so you catch the moment itself. Time-lapse instead records continuously at roughly one frame per second, which gives full coverage but fills the card and draws more power over a long stay.
Why it can drain the battery
To watch while parked, the camera has to stay powered from a source that stays live with the engine off. That means the constant, or always-on, 12V supply rather than the switched socket. A camera pulls only a small current, but a parked car makes none, so the draw is one way. Over many hours, or across several nights, a healthy battery can sag below the voltage it needs to crank the engine. Short trips make it worse, because the alternator never fully recharges what parking mode used.
How to run it safely
A hardwire kit taps constant power inside the fuse box and adds a low-voltage cutoff, so the camera shuts off once the battery falls to a set level, often around the high 11 to low 12 volt range, protecting your ability to start. A dedicated cam battery pack sidesteps the car entirely, charging while you drive and running parking mode from its own cells, then recharging on the next trip. The simplest option is to skip parking mode and plug into the switched socket, so the camera only runs while driving and cannot touch your starting battery. Choose based on how long the car sits and the state of its battery.
