Damper Adjustment Explained: Rebound, Compression and Clicks

Adjustable dampers control how fast the suspension moves, not how far, and turning everything to full stiff is the most common way to make a car slower.

Springs carry the weight; dampers control the speed at which the suspension moves. Adjusters change damping force, so more clicks is not more grip, and full stiff usually costs you traction.

A set of adjustable coilovers arrives with knobs and no instructions worth reading. Knowing what each adjustment actually does turns guesswork into a method.

One way, two way, three way

A single adjustable damper normally changes rebound, the resistance to the wheel extending back down, and often nudges compression a little at the same time. Two way separates compression and rebound onto their own adjusters. Three and four way splits those further into low speed and high speed circuits. Speed here means the speed of the damper shaft, not the car. Low speed damping handles body movements such as roll, pitch and weight transfer under braking. High speed damping handles the wheel being thrown up by a sharp bump or a kerb. That is why a car can be firm in corners yet still absorb a pothole, if the damper allows the two to be tuned separately.

A method that works

Set ride height and get an alignment before touching damping, because those change what the dampers are being asked to do. Count clicks from fully closed, note the number, and always adjust in the same direction so you can find your way back. Change one end of the car at a time and one or two clicks at a time, then drive the same piece of road or the same corner. If you cannot feel a change, you are chasing noise; go back and make a larger change. Write every setting down. The setup you liked is worthless if you cannot return to it.

What too much feels like

Excess rebound holds the wheel up after a bump, so over a series of bumps the suspension packs down and the car skitters, feeling nervous and losing grip precisely when it is loaded. Too little rebound leaves the body floating and slow to settle after direction changes. Excess compression makes the car kick and deflect off bumps rather than absorbing them, and it can be felt as harshness that arrives at the steering wheel. The fastest setup is usually softer than it feels like it should be, because grip comes from keeping the tyre on the road.

The conditions that matter
