Corner Balancing Explained: What Scaling a Car Really Does
Corner balancing sets how much weight each wheel carries by adjusting spring perch heights, so the car behaves the same turning left as it does turning right.
Scaling adjusts cross weight toward 50 percent so the diagonals are balanced. It needs height adjustable coilovers, and it is not a substitute for an alignment.
A car sitting on four scales rarely shows equal figures. Battery, fuel tank, exhaust routing and the driver are all off centre, and the suspension can be adjusted to compensate.
Cross weight is the number
Put the car on four scales and the meaningful figure is not the individual corners but the cross weight: the front left plus the rear right, divided by the total. At 50 percent the diagonal pairs carry equal load and the car has the same weight transfer behaviour in both directions. Above or below that, one diagonal is preloaded, so the car turns better one way than the other and can feel like it has a mechanical fault when it does not. Raising a spring perch adds load to that corner and to its diagonal partner, and takes it off the other two, which is what makes the adjustment possible at all.
How it is done properly
The setup has to match how the car is used. Fuel at the level you race or drive at, the driver in the seat or the equivalent ballast in it, tools and spare removed, tyre pressures set, and the anti roll bar links disconnected so the bar is not preloading a corner. The scales themselves must be level, which is why a proper shop uses a levelled platform. Ride height and cross weight interact, so the process is iterative: adjust, roll the car, settle the suspension, measure again. Then align it, because changing perch height has moved camber and toe.
Is it worth doing on your car
On a track car with adjustable coilovers, corner balancing is one of the higher value setup jobs and it costs nothing but time once the coilovers are there. On a road car on stock or fixed height suspension there is nothing to adjust, so the answer is no. It also cannot fix a car that is fundamentally nose heavy or has an asymmetric static distribution; it balances the diagonals within what the car already is. Have it done after any change that alters ride height, and confirm the alignment afterwards rather than before.
