Coilovers vs Air Suspension: Which for a Daily?
Both drop the car and both are legal. They are built for different jobs, though, and picking the wrong one for daily driving is an expensive mistake.
Coilovers give the sharpest handling for the least money and complexity, at a fixed ride height you set once. Air suspension trades some ultimate response and a lot of cost for ride height you can change on the move. For a daily, both are legal; the choice is handling versus flexibility.
Coilovers and air both replace the spring and damper to lower the car, but they solve different problems. Here is how they compare where it counts for everyday use.
Coilovers: handling first
A coilover is a threaded spring-and-damper you set to a fixed height, usually with adjustable damping. It is lighter, simpler and cheaper than air, and it gives the most direct handling because there is no air bag flex in the way. The trade is that the height is a compromise you live with: low enough to look right can be firm and scrape-prone on a daily.
Air suspension: flexibility first
Air replaces the spring with an air bag and a compressor, so you can raise the car for speed bumps and driveways and drop it when parked. That is genuinely useful day to day and unbeatable for stance. The cost is money, weight, complexity and more to go wrong: compressor, bags, lines and management all become failure points.
Which for daily driving
If you value how the car drives and want the least hassle and cost, coilovers. If you regularly meet steep driveways or speed bumps, or want a parked stance without daily scraping, air earns its keep. A quieter third option is a good set of lowering springs for a mild, cheap drop.
The legal and safety side
Both are legal in the UK as long as the car stays safe: suspension sound, headlamp aim correct, tyres not fouling and nothing so low it grounds out. Tell your insurer either way. Air suspension and coilovers face the same roadworthiness tests.
