Car Amplifiers and Subwoofers: How to Match Them
A subwoofer moves a lot of air to make bass, and it needs a dedicated amplifier to drive it properly.
A subwoofer needs far more clean power than a head unit can supply, so it runs through its own amplifier. The single most important step is to match the amplifier RMS output to the subwoofer RMS rating at the same impedance.
A subwoofer reproduces the lowest frequencies, and moving that much air takes real power. A factory stereo cannot supply it, so bass upgrades pair a sub with an amplifier sized to suit it. Getting that pairing right matters more than the badge on either box.
Why a subwoofer needs an amplifier
A head unit puts out only a few watts of clean power per channel, which is fine for door speakers but nowhere near enough for deep bass. A subwoofer needs tens or hundreds of watts to move its cone far enough to make low notes at volume. An external amplifier supplies that power on its own dedicated channel. Push a small built-in amp too hard and it clips, sending a distorted signal that both sounds bad and can overheat and kill a sub, so a properly sized amplifier protects the speaker as well as feeding it.
Matching power the right way
Ignore the big peak or max wattage on the box. That number is a brief burst figure and is mostly marketing. The rating that matters is RMS, the continuous power the gear handles or delivers all day. Match the amplifier RMS output to the subwoofer RMS rating, and check they line up at the same impedance, usually 2 or 4 ohms, because an amp makes different power into different loads. A rough match, say a 500 watt RMS amp on a 500 watt RMS sub, gives clean headroom. Underpowering tempts you to crank the gain, which causes the clipping that actually damages subs.
Enclosures and wiring
Subs come two ways. An active or powered sub packs the driver, box, and amp into one unit, which is simple to fit and light on boot space. A passive sub is just the driver, so you choose the enclosure and a separate amplifier and have more control. The box shapes the sound too. A sealed box gives tight, accurate bass, while a ported box is louder and boomier for the same power. Whichever you pick, use a proper amp wiring kit. It runs a suitably thick power cable straight from the battery with an inline fuse, plus a solid earth to bare metal, so the amp gets clean current without starving the rest of the car.
The conditions that matter
