Bedding In Brakes: Why New Pads Need a Heat Cycle

Bedding in is a controlled heat cycle that lays an even film of pad material onto the disc. Skip it and you get juddering, weak bite and early fade. It takes minutes and costs nothing.

Bedding in, or breaking in, is a set of progressively harder stops that transfers an even layer of friction material onto the disc and heat-cures the pad surface. Done right it gives smooth, consistent braking; skipped, it causes vibration, uneven bite and premature fade.

New pads and discs do not reach their best braking straight out of the box. A short, deliberate bedding-in process sets them up to work properly, and getting it wrong is behind a lot of the judder people blame on warped discs.

What bedding in does

Braking works partly through a thin, even layer of pad material deposited onto the disc face, with the pad then gripping against its own transferred film. Bedding in is the controlled process that lays that layer down evenly and, on many compounds, heat-cures the resin in a fresh pad. The result is smooth, predictable bite and full friction from a setup that would otherwise feel wooden and inconsistent when new.

What happens if you skip it

Come to a hard stop and hold the pedal on brand-new brakes and you can leave an uneven patch of material sitting on the disc. That uneven deposit is what most people feel as a pulsing or juddering under braking and wrongly call a warped disc, when the disc itself is usually straight. Poorly bedded brakes also bite inconsistently and fade sooner, because the pad and disc never established a clean, uniform contact surface.

How it is done

Always follow the pad maker's procedure, but most road compounds want a series of moderate-to-firm stops from moderate speed, easing off the pedal before the car halts, with a short cool-down so the brakes never sit glowing hot at a standstill. This heats the pad and disc in stages and lays the film down evenly. Track compounds usually need a more aggressive bed-in to reach higher temperatures. New discs with used pads, or the reverse, still benefit from the process.
