What Anti-Lag Is, and Why It Destroys Turbos
Anti-lag keeps a turbo spinning by burning fuel in the exhaust, which cuts lag and punishes hardware.
Anti-lag deliberately burns fuel after the exhaust valve to keep the turbine spooled off-throttle. It eliminates lag but subjects the turbo and exhaust to extreme heat and stress, which is why it belongs on race hardware.
Turbo lag is the delay between lifting off and getting back on boost. Anti-lag attacks that delay directly, but the method is violent. It is a rally and race technique, not a free upgrade.
How it keeps the turbo spinning
Normally, when you lift off the throttle, exhaust flow drops and the turbine slows down, so getting back on boost takes time. Anti-lag keeps combustion happening when it should not. By holding the throttle slightly open and altering fuelling and ignition timing, unburnt fuel and air ignite in the exhaust manifold rather than the cylinder. Those explosions keep energy flowing across the turbine, so it stays spinning and boost is ready the instant you get back on the throttle.
Why it is so hard on parts
Burning fuel in the exhaust creates enormous heat and pressure exactly where the turbine and manifold live. Turbine housings can glow, and the thermal load accelerates wear on the turbo, exhaust valves, and manifold. The repeated pressure spikes stress bearings and seals. Some systems even accept regular turbo rebuilds as a cost of running it. This is why anti-lag is associated with cars that are maintained between events, not daily drivers.
Where it belongs
Anti-lag makes sense in competition, where instant boost is worth sacrificing component life and where teams can service or replace parts often. It is loud, produces flames and bangs from the exhaust, and can be hard on emissions equipment, so it is generally not suited or legal for the road. Milder strategies like a rolling launch or a well-matched turbo give some of the benefit without the destruction.
