What the car must always have
Every car needs an exterior mirror on the driver’s side, plus either an interior mirror or a nearside exterior mirror, so you get an adequate view of following and overtaking traffic. Swapping to smaller aftermarket door mirrors is fine as long as they still give a clear, usable rear view. Towing mirrors are the opposite case
When you tow a caravan or trailer wider than the car, the standard mirrors no longer see past the load, and the law then requires extension towing mirrors so you keep an adequate view down both sides. They are correct kit while towing a wide load, and you take them off once you are not, since oversized mirrors left on unladen stick out further than the car needs.
